The Victron Energy VDI-16 galvanic isolator (MPN GDI000016000) is an indispensable device to prevent electrolytic corrosion on your boat. It blocks all low-voltage direct currents that can enter your boat via the shore power ground cable, thus protecting important metal parts such as the hull, propeller, and shaft from corrosion.

How It Works

The internal structure of the galvanic isolator consists of two diodes connected in a special arrangement. These diodes allow current flow in both directions, but only if the voltage exceeds a certain value. The forward voltage is 1.4 Vdc. This ensures that the isolator does not allow electrolytic current, even if the potential difference between the metals is small.

However, in the event of a higher fault current in the AC circuit, the diodes react and allow the current to pass through, while the residual current device interrupts the circuit.
