Components of a Balcony Power Plant
- Solar Modules: The heart of a balcony power plant is the solar modules. Modern systems often use highly efficient monocrystalline or polycrystalline modules. With the current regulations in Germany and Austria allowing a capacity of up to 800 watts, systems with two modules of 400 watts each or more can be installed. Some advanced systems even utilize bifacial modules that can capture reflected light on their backside, potentially increasing energy yield.
- Microinverters: Complementing the solar modules, the microinverter is a crucial component. It converts the direct current (DC) generated by the modules into grid-compliant alternating current (AC). High-quality microinverters not only ensure efficient power conversion but often also provide monitoring functions that allow users to track their system's performance via smartphone apps or web interfaces. With the new 800-watt regulation, more powerful inverters are now available on the market.
- Wiring and Connections: To connect the modules to the inverter and to the household grid, specialized solar cables and appropriate connectors are needed. For feeding into the household grid, a Schuko plug or a specialized feed-in socket is usually used.
- Mounting System: Depending on the installation location, various mounting systems are offered, ranging from simple balcony mounts to upright mounts for flat roofs and specialized systems for sloped roofs or ground mounting.
- Batteries Storage (optional but recommended): An increasingly important component of many balcony power plants are battery storage systems. These allow for the storage and use of excess electricity when the solar modules produce little or no power, such as at night or on cloudy days. This can significantly increase the self-consumption share of the self-generated electricity, enhancing the economic viability and benefits of the balcony power plant. Modern storage systems are compact, safe, and can be easily integrated into existing balcony power plants. Integrating a battery storage system into a balcony power plant can significantly enhance its efficiency and utility. It allows users to utilize a larger share of their self-generated electricity and reduces dependence on the public power grid. Especially in households with high electricity consumption during the evening hours or in variable weather conditions, storage can be a great advantage.
Advantages of Balcony Power Plants
Energy Savings
One of the most attractive aspects of balcony power plants is the potential for immediate energy savings. A well-positioned system can generate between 300 and 500 kWh of electricity per installed module per year. This can lead to significant reductions in electricity bills, especially in regions with high energy costs. With current electricity prices averaging 30 to 40 cents per kWh, a typical system with two modules could save users around 180 to 400 euros annually, depending on local electricity prices, the orientation of the modules, and individual consumption patterns.
Legal Aspects
In Germany and Austria, regulations for smaller solar systems like balcony power plants have been simplified. Since 2024, systems up to 800 watts can be installed in both countries without extensive paperwork. This increase from the previous 600 watts to 800 watts allows users to install more powerful systems and thus generate more electricity. However, users are generally required to register their system with the grid operator and electricity supplier. In Austria, a notification to the responsible state electricity authority is also required.
Storage Solutions
While traditional balcony power plants are designed to feed the generated electricity directly into the household circuit, newer models increasingly integrate battery storage options. These systems allow for the storage of excess energy for times of low sunlight or high demand, further increasing the utility and potential savings of the system.
Particularly noteworthy are the PV storage systems from Zendure and Anker Solix. Zendure offers a flexible solution with its SolarFlow system, which can be easily integrated into existing balcony power plants and provides a capacity of up to 3.84 kWh. Anker Solix has also launched a powerful option with its Solarbank system, characterized by its compact design and easy expandability.
These storage systems not only significantly increase the self-consumption share of self-generated electricity but also offer the opportunity to use stored electricity at times of high electricity prices, further enhancing the economic viability of the balcony power plant.
Flexibility in Installation
The installation options for balcony power plants are diverse and adapt to various living situations. The mounting solutions range from simple balcony railing clamps to more robust constructions for ground or roof installation. This flexibility allows users to optimize the placement of their system for maximum sunlight exposure and energy production.
Environmental Impact
The environmental impact of balcony power plants is remarkable. By generating clean, renewable electricity, these small systems help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lower CO2 emissions. Even though the impact of a single system may seem small, the collective effect of widespread usage in urban areas can be significant.
